Adrenaline-part 1
Adrenaline.-defined on dictionary.com as "a sudden burst of energy from an increase in the hormone and neurotransmitter adrenaline, esp. increased heart rate and blood pressure, perspiration, blood sugar, and metabolism". There have been moments at work where I felt the rush of adrenaline, none of which are moments I want to remember. Those times have been times of high stress and intensity, where often someone's life hung in the balance, or even just their well-being.
So many stories come to mind, I will do a two part series of adrenaline, but here is a story tonight: My last week at work before I left for school, I was in a patient's room, we were picking up our dinner trays for the night and making note of how much they had eaten, as we normally do, and I was glad I was in there. I went in and made small talk as I went to pick up the tray. I had my hands on the tray when she started choking. I immediately reached up and hit the CODE EMERGENCY button and looked back down at her. Time was moving SO slowly, and it felt like it had been an hour and no one was coming still, and suddenly she seemed to get control of her breathing, so I cancelled it, and no one had reached the room yet. Then suddenly I heard her start gasping again, and then she clutched her throat.
I hit the CODE BLUE button, and then, for some odd reason, when no one came right away, I cancelled it and went running for my boss, who I would trust with my life (another story for another day). He was running for the code light, so I yelled to him, and all I could get out was "_____, please." Luckily he seemed to already know what I needed, and sprinted into the room and soon helped the patient, who is now fine. Adrenaline did something strange to me that day: I cancelled the CODE BLUE button I so desperately needed on, the button that would be the fastest way to summon help to me, and yet I cancelled it. I can't wait to learn to control and use that power and blessing that Heavenly Father has given us in a way that will actually be fully effective. Until that day comes, I have been blessed with those amazingly skilled and talented nurses with whom I will proudly work alongside one day soon. Part two of adrenaline will be next week. Have a great week everyone! :)
