The Disgustingly Happy Newlyweds

Image
Tyler and I have been married for just over seven months now, and it's the comments of those around us who have driven me to write this post. Lest any of you cringe, it wasn't negative comments but rather the casual or slightly surprised "You guys are so happy" remarks that have started the cogs turning for me. Each one has caught me off guard, because why shouldn't we be happy? These thoughts might come across jumbled, but here are a few reasons why Tyler and I are "so happy": 1. We have an eternal marriage--  We knelt across an altar in the Ogden temple on April 25th and covenanted to each other and to our God for time and for all eternity that we would heed and follow His commandments, and that if we do so, we will be blessed to be together forever. I get to keep Tyler for the rest of eternity if I do my best here on earth. It is my covenanted responsibility to cherish him. That's bigger than any argument we could have about if we should p...

Are you disagreeing, or just being disagreeable?

Image
Friday was a very controversial and life-changing day for a lot of Americans. While I am not the first (and most assuredly not the last) to post on the Supreme Court ruling, I would like to offer a few thoughts on the situation. First, let me explain my thoughts and actions since hearing of the Supreme Court's decision: I am against gay marriage, and when I heard the ruling you can imagine my feelings on the subject. Suffice to say I was frustrated, and started reading many articles, blog posts, and news stories on the ramifications of this event, many of which I shared so that those who believe as I do could see what was coming, or understand as I now do how this can alter marriage, adoption, religious freedoms, and society in general both now and in the future. I have studied (and almost have a Bachelor's degree in) Marriage and Family Studies. This is not only a moral debate, but career-altering information for me. I was definitely undergoing some heated scrutiny for doi...

Outliers

Image
Outlier: a mathematical term for something or someone varying from the norm. I believe that outliers are what we notice or are affected by the most in our lives. Especially once you have worked in a particular job or field for an extended period of time, even traumatic events can start to be the baseline, and you go about your job until an outlier blindsides you. For me, domestic violence calls have become my baseline, and I forget the average Joe on the street doesn't openly discuss people being thrown, punched, or attacked without batting an eye. The calls that I remember with the most clarity are the extremely violent, the young, the old, and the most heartbreaking. This call was an outlier.  The call from dispatch sent us flying to the Emergency Room, where we waited for the ambulance to arrive, and then waited almost an hour for her to be evaluated, treated and have documentation of her injuries.    We finally got the call to go back, and I knew it was ...

Feminism vs. Gender Roles: How I can believe in both

Image
I am a fierce and passionate feminist. Let it be known that I am completely on board with women being considered equal to men.I also believe in gender roles, and cannot wait to fulfill my #1 goal of being a stay-at-home wife and mother. Believers in both ideas would call me a traitor or fence-sitter. I am about to tell you why I am not a walking contradiction (in this topic anyway). I believe that gender roles are a stronghold for a stable community. Before anyone decides to get spicy, do I mean that a man cannot be a good cook or nurturer? Of course not! Do I mean a woman isn't capable of holding her own in an office or any workforce? Of course not! We are all capable of so many incredible things, each of us with unlimited potential. But each gender has intrinsic and divinely placed gifts, so we are each asked to lift where we stand by using the gifts we have to better the world around us. The Proclamation to the Family states: "Gender is an essential characteristic of indi...

Desensitizing-Is it happening to you?

Image
Clinton, UT -A quiet small town, population of almost 21,000, unheard of by most of the world until recently. Unfortunately, it made news on a certain night in November, a holiday of Thanksgiving and gratitude for the blessings God has granted us. At approximately 8pm Walmart employees cut away the wrapping on tablets. These tablets had a retail price of $50, but ended up being more costly than that. As you'll see in the video below, the crowd surges forward, and in an instant, someone falls beneath the rushing feet. You hear police yelling for everyone to step back so they can get to the woman now being trampled by a crowd similar to wild animals in the forest. I cannot finish watching this video, as it pains me to watch human beings act so ferocious towards each other for plastic and metal. One thing I did notice however, and I want you to notice too, is that there are two kinds of heartless animal mentalities in this crowd. As you hear the call rippling through the air for p...

I Am Not Your Punching Bag

Image
This week has been busy with work at both jobs, and I have done something this week that I have never done before-stand up for myself. I have two patients, one at each facility, that have been extremely rude this week to our staff, screaming at the employees, refusing to let us do our job until they have things done in the order and at what particular time they want it, regardless of the other patients in the building or what time we are supposed to leave work. This can be exasperating for caregivers, and is unfair to us as we try to do our job to be treated in this manner. In all the years I've been working, I've never had the guts to stand up for myself, and I've stood in the room and allowed patients to yell at me and chew me out, to the point that I leave their rooms crying and can't go back in any more that shift as a result. I recognized this week as I heard one particular patient screaming at the nurse who was trying to give him insulin to manage his diabetes, ...

A CNA's importance

Image
"A nurses’ aide (Certified Nurses Aid – CNA) is the unsung hero of the nursing world. When someone asks what you do, never simply say “I’m just the aide”. When we speak of bedside care and we refer to the ‘team effort’ this part of the team is probably the most under-appreciated, yet most needed team member. They are the silent majority. When they are doing what they do best, you sometimes (more often than we like to admit) forget they are there. But, when they are absent it turns your whole world upside down."-Scrubs Magazine

The moral of the bedsheet and the water bottle

Image
I got to go back to work this week after finishing finals, hence why there was no post last week. I’ll post twice to make up for it. Here is a picture of something fun I did while I wasn’t posting-bridge jumping! Super fun, what a rush! I’ll even make this a “ Do Not Try This At Home ” photo. ;) I have noticed something this week that I had never really paid close attention to before, and that is how aides are treated by those around them, be it family members or nurses or the patients themselves. I will share two experiences of this, the first is a negative response, and we’ll end on a happy note, I promise. :)  We were having one heck of a night. We have three aides for over 20 patients, and for some reason this batch of patients are very extensive and demanding. In lieu of that comment, as you can imagine, we were running our heads off, literally running from light to light to catch up. Showers didn’t get done, we clocked out really late that night, it was cra...
